When I was 18 years old I wrote a mindless poem about how I could no longer call myself a Christian because of the history of abuse by the Church over the centuries. I walked away from the faith because I could not distinguish the acts of evil humans within the church and the church itself. But I was a freshman in college. Today we examine an article by a “pastor” in the United Methodist Church who has decided to reject the cross because others have used it as a symbol in commission of evil acts. What drove her to this conclusion? The acts of an anti-semitic, Trump-hating, Nazi who attacked the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Marcion suggested that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament are different gods. One is violent and cruel, the other loving and forgiving.
